Chioggia sits at the southern end of the Venetian Lagoon and has the same urban DNA as Venice: a grid of canals crossed by bridges, a main corso (Corso del Popolo) running between two parallel canals, colorful houses along the waterfront, and a fish market that's been operating since the Middle Ages. What Chioggia doesn't have: 30 million tourists per year. On a Tuesday morning at the fish market, you'll share the experience with fishermen, housewives, and perhaps three other visitors. The town has 50,000 residents, a genuine fishing economy (Chioggia is the largest fishing port on the Adriatic), and the particular beauty of a place that looks like Venice but functions like a normal Italian town where people buy groceries and argue about parking. The fish market (Mercato Ittico): Every morning along Canale della Vena — Adriatic fish, shellfish, and the Chioggia radicchio (a specific variety — IGP — red and round, used in risotto). Canal della Vena: The main canal parallel to the Corso — lined with colored houses and crossed by stone bridges. Gondini (small boats) and fishing vessels moored along the fondamenta. The campanile (1350): The oldest brick bell tower in the lagoon — climbable for views over the town, lagoon, and Adriatic. Sottomarina: Chioggia's beach — a long, wide sandy beach on the barrier island south of town. Lido access, family-friendly, much cheaper than Venice Lido.
Getting there: Bus from Venice Piazzale Roma (ACTV line 25E, 1h). Boat from Venice (seasonal, Alilaguna). By car: 45min from Venice (parking available — unlike Venice itself). Stay: €50-100/night (much cheaper than Venice). Eat: El Gato (€25-40 — frittura mista, spaghetti alle vongole), Osteria Penzo (€20-30). Radicchio di Chioggia: The round, red radicchio — in risotto or grilled. November-March is peak season. Combine with: Venice (bus or boat, 1h), Padova (40min), Terme Abano (30min), the Lagoon (boat trips to the islands).
