What to do

Summer: Hike the Valnontey valley to the Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2,588m, 3h โ€” one of Italy's most scenic rifugio approaches), search for ibex and marmots on the Lauson trail, visit the Giardino Alpino Paradisia (Alpine botanical garden, 1,700m, €3). Winter: Cogne has 80km of groomed cross-country skiing trails โ€” one of the best Nordic skiing centers in the Alps. Downhill skiing at the small Cogne resort. Snowshoeing to the frozen Lillaz waterfall (3km from village โ€” the icefall is spectacular). Year-round: Ibex watching on the Prati di Sant'Orso (especially December-March when they descend to the meadow), the lace cooperative, and the village itself (stone houses, chapels, a Romanesque church).
