Cogne sits at 1,544 meters in the Valnontey valley, the main gateway to the Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso (Italy's first national park, 1922) and arguably the most beautiful mountain village in the Valle d'Aosta. The Prati di Sant'Orso — a vast Alpine meadow below the village — is where Gran Paradiso's famous ibex descend in winter to graze, so close you can photograph them from 20 meters. In summer, the meadow fills with wildflowers and the backdrop of the Gran Paradiso massif (4,061m) makes landscape photographers question their life choices (because nothing they shoot elsewhere will match this).
