Between Ortona and Vasto, on the southern Abruzzo coast, dozens of trabocchi line the shore — wooden platforms on stilts extending 15-20 meters into the sea, connected to the cliff by narrow walkways, with a system of nets, winches, and pulleys for catching fish without boats. The trabocchi date back at least to the 18th century (possibly medieval) and are unique to this stretch of Adriatic coast. Many have been converted into restaurants — eating fresh-caught fish on a wooden platform over the water, with waves breaking below your table, is one of Italy's most unusual and atmospheric dining experiences. Book well ahead — summer weekends sell out weeks in advance. Trabocco Punta Cavalluccio: Dramatic position on the headland — the waves crash audibly. €30-45. Trabocco Sasso della Cajana (Vallevò): Intimate, atmospheric. €30-40. Trabocco Cungarelle: Near Vasto — excellent food, less touristy. €25-40. The meal: always fish — antipasti of marinated anchovies, raw shellfish, followed by spaghetti allo scoglio or brodetto (fish stew), then grilled catch. Wine: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo or Trebbiano.
42km from Ortona to Vasto Marina, built on the disused coastal railway. Flat, paved, sea-level, with tunnels, bridges, and direct trabocchi access. Bike rental at multiple points (€15-25/day). Best sections: San Vito Chietino to Fossacesia (15km — most trabocchi, most scenic), Torino di Sangro to Casalbordino (12km — wilder, less developed).
Getting there: Pescara (30min to San Vito), Vasto (south end). Trains stop at coastal stations along the route. By car: A14 autostrada exits at Ortona, Lanciano, Vasto. Stay: San Vito Chietino (€50-90 — the trabocchi epicenter), Fossacesia, Vasto. Book trabocchi restaurants 1-2 weeks ahead in summer. Combine with: Guardiagrele (30min inland), Majella (40min), Lanciano (15min — Miracle of the Eucharist), Chieti (30min).
