Elcito is called "il Tibet delle Marche" — the Tibet of the Marche — because of its extreme isolation and altitude. A cluster of stone houses at 821m on the slopes of Monte San Vicino (1,479m), the hamlet has approximately 7 permanent residents (the number fluctuates — some sources say 8, some 6, but single digits regardless). There is no shop, no bar, no restaurant, no accommodation. There is a church (usually locked), stone houses (some restored, some ruined), a single unpaved lane, and the particular quality of silence that comes from near-complete human absence. Getting there: car from San Severino Marche (15min on a narrow mountain road). No public transport. The road is paved but narrow — passable for any car, but drive slowly. No facilities at all in Elcito — bring water, food, and everything you need. Duration: 30min-1h for the village, half day with Monte San Vicino hike. Respect: The 7 residents are real people — don't photograph their windows, don't try their doors, and keep voices low.
