Favignana is shaped like a butterfly, 17km off the coast of Trapani in western Sicily. For 2,000 years (Phoenician→Arab→Norman→Florio), the island's identity was the MATTANZA — the annual tuna slaughter, a ritual hunt using a fixed trap system (tonnara) that channeled migrating bluefin tuna into a series of nets culminating in the "camera della morte" (death chamber) where they were killed by hand. The mattanza ended in 2007 (tuna populations collapsed). The Stabilimento Florio — the massive 19th-century tuna processing factory — is now a museum. What remains: the water. Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, Bue Marino — coves cut into tufa cliffs with water so clear the boats appear to float in air.
Cala Rossa: THE beach — turquoise water in a former tufa quarry, the white cliff walls amplifying the color. Named for the blood of Carthaginian soldiers killed here in the Battle of the Aegates (241 BC) — Rome's naval victory that ended the First Punic War. Now: crystal water + swimmers. History has a sense of irony. Cala Azzurra: Sandy, shallow, family-friendly, the gentlest water. Bue Marino: Former monk seal cave (now empty — the seals left decades ago). Lido Burrone: Sandy, stabilimenti available. The quarries: Favignana's coastline is shaped by tufa quarrying (the stone built half of Trapani). The abandoned quarries are now gardens below street level — sunken paradises.
Stabilimento Florio (Ex-Tonnara): The Florio family (Sicily's 19th-century industrial dynasty) built the largest tuna processing plant in the Mediterranean HERE. Now a museum — the tools, the boats, the nets, the process, the SCALE of an industry that defined this island for centuries. €6. The mattanza footage (available in the museum): Black-and-white film of the last mattanze — the rais (the boss of the hunt, an Arab title surviving 1,000 years) directing the fishermen as they close the nets. Violent, ancient, and gone forever.
Hydrofoil from Trapani: 25 min (€10-15). Ferry: 1h. Rent a bike on the island (the ONLY way to reach the best coves — the island is flat, 9km long, perfect cycling). €5-10/day. Stay 2-3 nights: The day-trippers leave at 5pm. After that, the island is YOURS. Secret islands → · Sicily road trip →
