The Trevi Fountain (1762, Nicola Salvi) is 26.3 meters high and 49.2 meters wide. It is not a fountain IN a piazza โ it IS the piazza. The entire rear wall of the Palazzo Poli becomes a cliff face from which Oceanus emerges on a shell chariot pulled by sea horses. Water crashes over rocks, pools in a basin the size of a swimming pool, and has been doing so since the Acqua Vergine aqueduct was restored in 1453 (the aqueduct itself dates to 19 BC โ Augustus's general Agrippa built it to supply his baths. The water source: a virgin girl allegedly showed soldiers the spring 12km from Rome. The water still flows. 2,045 years). โฌ3,000 in coins are thrown in daily. Collected nightly. Given to Caritas for Rome's poor. Anita Ekberg waded in at 3am for La Dolce Vita (1960). You will not. The fine is โฌ450.
Oceanus (Neptune): The central figure โ standing on a shell chariot, commanding the sea. The two sea horses: one calm (the sea at peace), one rearing (the sea in storm). The allegories: Abundance (left niche, with cornucopia) and Health (right niche, with a cup from which a snake drinks). The rocks: Carved from travertine (the same stone as the Colosseum), designed to look NATURAL โ Salvi created a cliff face that seems to have erupted from the building behind it. The water: 80,000 cubic meters per day flow through the fountain โ the same Acqua Vergine that's been flowing since Augustus. The coin tradition: Right hand, over left shoulder, back to the fountain. 1 coin = return to Rome. 2 coins = find love. 3 coins = marry. The tradition was invented by the 1954 film Three Coins in the Fountain. Before that, nobody threw coins.
AT NIGHT (after 10pm): The crowds thin. The fountain is LIT. The water sounds louder without 3,000 people talking. This is when the fountain becomes what Salvi intended โ theatrical, overwhelming, baroque in the ORIGINAL sense. AT DAWN (6-7am): Empty. The morning light hits the travertine. Municipal workers may be cleaning. You and the fountain. AVOID 10am-8pm: Packed solid. Pickpockets active. Selfie sticks as weapons. The fountain is currently undergoing periodic maintenance โ check before visiting (it was fully restored 2014-2015 by Fendi, the fashion house, for โฌ2.2M).
Piazza di Trevi. Metro A: Barberini (5 min walk). Free. Always open (it's a piazza). Gelato nearby: San Crispino (Via della Panetteria 42 โ among Rome's best, served in cups only, no cones). DO NOT eat at the restaurants on Piazza di Trevi โ tourist trap pricing, mediocre food. Walk 2 blocks in any direction. Day 3 โ ยท All Rome fountains โ
