Monte Catria (1,701m) rises directly behind Frontone, and Dante mentions it in Paradiso (Canto XXI, 109-110): "between the two shores of Italy, crags rise, not very distant from your homeland, so high that the thunder sounds far below" — referring to the Catria massif and the Fonte Avellana monastery on its slopes. Frontone's medieval castle (Rocca Malatestiana, 13th century) dominates the village below, and the natural thermals created by Monte Catria make the area one of the best for paragliding and kite flying in central Italy. The Festival Internazionale dell'Aquilone (International Kite Festival, September) fills the sky above the castle with kites from around the world — a spectacle of color against the Apennine backdrop.
