Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (1422-1482), was a warrior who loved books more than battle. He hired Luciano Laurana and Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build a palace (1468-82) that would embody the Renaissance ideal of the complete human environment โ light, proportion, learning, beauty. The Palazzo Ducale is the result: the most refined palace in 15th-century Italy, with the Studiolo (a tiny room entirely inlaid with trompe-l'oeil marquetry depicting books, instruments, and armor โ a portrait of Federico's mind in wood), and a courtyard of such mathematical harmony that looking at it is like listening to a Bach fugue. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche (inside the palace) has Piero della Francesca's Flagellation of Christ and Raphael's early works. Raphael was born here in 1483. His house is a museum. Urbino is also a university town (27,000 students) โ alive, youthful, caffeinated. Marche →
