Gallipoli's centro storico occupies an island connected to the mainland by a 17th-century bridge. The island is entirely baroque — churches (the Cathedral of Sant'Agata has a facade dripping with carved fruit, flowers, and saints), palazzi, an Angevin castle on the water's edge, and the Frantoio Ipogeo (underground olive oil mill, carved from the rock, used for centuries to produce lamp oil exported across Europe). The name comes from Greek: Kali Polis — Beautiful City. The beaches south of Gallipoli — Baia Verde, Punta della Suina, Punta Pizzo — are among the finest white-sand beaches on the Italian mainland, with shallow, warm Ionian water. In summer, Gallipoli is the Salento's party capital — beach clubs, outdoor music, and the nightlife that Italian twenty-somethings flock to.
