The result is the most completely preserved ancient Roman town in the world. Most tourists go to Pompeii. Herculaneum is better.
The Circumvesuviana is a regional railway circling Vesuvius, run by EAV (Ente Autonomo Volturno). From Naples: board at Napoli Porta Nolana station (on the waterfront near Piazza Garibaldi) or at Napoli Garibaldi (the underground level below Piazza Garibaldi / Napoli Centrale). The correct destination: Ercolano Scavi station (not "Ercolano" — get off at Ercolano Scavi, which is the station adjacent to the archaeological site). Journey time from Napoli Porta Nolana: approximately 20 minutes. Ticket: €2.80 single (buy at the ticket windows or machines at the station — contactless payment available at machines). Frequency: every 30 minutes during the day. From Ercolano Scavi station: the archaeological site entrance is a 5-10 minute walk downhill following the signs to "Parco Archeologico di Ercolano."
The physics of the two burial mechanisms explain everything. Pompeii (15km from Vesuvius) was hit by ashfall and pumice raining down over 12-18 hours — buildings were crushed by the cumulative weight of light material, organic items rotted under the ash over 2,000 years, and the upper stories of buildings typically collapsed. Herculaneum (8km from Vesuvius) was hit by pyroclastic surges — superheated clouds of rock, gas, and volcanic material moving at 100km/h that instantly carbonized and then entombed everything. The carbonization process preserved: wooden beams still in place, a wooden boat found at the beach excavations, carbonized bread in bakery ovens, scrolls from the Villa dei Papiri (being decoded by digital techniques as of 2026), wooden bed frames and furniture, painted plaster at extraordinary levels of preservation, and the upper storeys of buildings still partly standing. Walking through Herculaneum gives you a fundamentally different experience from Pompeii — not ruins but rooms.
Herculaneum was discovered accidentally in 1709 when a well-digger in Resina (the modern town of Ercolano built over the ancient site) hit marble statues at 20 metres depth. The Bourbon king Charles III began systematic excavation in 1738 — 20 years before Pompeii's systematic excavation. The early excavations were conducted by tunneling through the hardened volcanic rock (rather than surface excavation, which wasn't possible until the 19th century), producing extraordinary finds of bronze sculptures and marble — many of which are now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, which was specifically built (as the Palazzo degli Studi in 1777) to house the Herculaneum and Pompeii finds. The Villa dei Papiri — a private villa discovered in the 18th century tunnels containing the only intact classical library ever found (1,800 papyrus scrolls) — has been the focus of intensive digital analysis. The Vesuvius Challenge (2023-2025) used machine learning to decode previously unreadable carbonized scrolls, revealing previously unknown philosophical texts from Philodemus of Gadara.
The most important areas: The Boat Storage Arches (the ancient beach, now buried inland under modern Ercolano — the vaulted boat arches where 300 people sheltered and were killed by the pyroclastic surge; their skeletons were found in 1981 and are still in place behind glass). The House of the Deer (Casa dei Cervi — named for the sculpture of a deer attacked by dogs found here, the most elaborate private house in the site, with intact garden spaces and two-storey preserved walls). The House of Neptune and Amphitrite (with the most stunning preserved mosaic in Herculaneum, showing Neptune and Amphitrite in vivid blue and yellow glass tesserae). The Thermopolium (the ancient fast-food counter, with food storage jars still in the marble counter and painted walls above). The Terme Suburbane (the baths outside the main town, with extraordinary stucco relief ceilings and views of the original beach level).
Herculaneum alone: 2-3 hours at a proper pace. The site is significantly smaller than Pompeii (only about 20% of the ancient city has been excavated — most lies under modern Ercolano) but the density of interesting preserved material makes it feel fuller than the comparison suggests. Combining with Pompeii: Pompeii is a further 15 minutes on the Circumvesuviana from Ercolano (get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri). The combined Pompeii + Herculaneum in one day is possible but exhausting — both sites together require 5-6 hours minimum. A better approach: dedicate a half-day to Herculaneum (morning, fresher) and if you want Pompeii, make it a separate day. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN) in Naples holds the extraordinary collection of finds from both Herculaneum and Pompeii that were moved to Naples from the 18th century onward. The most important Herculaneum material: the Herculaneum bronzes (including the Drunken Satyr, the sleeping Hermes, and multiple portrait busts of extraordinary quality — these are the bronzes from the Villa dei Papiri that remain among the finest surviving bronze sculptures from antiquity), the Secret Cabinet (the collection of erotic art from Pompeii and Herculaneum, now permanently displayed), and the carbonized papyri from the Villa dei Papiri. A visit to MANN (€15 entry) is the essential complement to the Herculaneum site visit — you see the buildings in situ at the site, and the objects that came from them at the museum.
The Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum contained the only surviving library from the ancient world: approximately 1,800 papyrus scrolls carbonized by the 79 AD eruption. The scrolls were too fragile to unroll for 250 years — any physical manipulation caused them to disintegrate. Digital imaging techniques (multispectral imaging, X-ray tomography, and since 2023 the Vesuvius Challenge's AI-driven ink detection) have allowed researchers to read text without physically unrolling the scrolls. The Vesuvius Challenge (a $1 million prize competition launched in 2023) produced the first decipherable text from a complete unrolled scroll in 2024: philosophical text by Philodemus of Gadara discussing pleasure and Epicurean philosophy. More scrolls are being decoded as of 2026. The scrolls are primarily held at the National Library in Naples and the Bodleian Library in Oxford; the physical villa site beneath modern Ercolano has not been fully excavated.
The experiential difference: Pompeii is a city, Herculaneum is a neighborhood. Pompeii covers approximately 66 hectares and requires 3-4 hours minimum for a reasonable visit — its scale can be overwhelming and the walking distances significant. Herculaneum's excavated area is approximately 4.5 hectares and visits of 2 hours are sufficient for the main areas. The preserved organic material at Herculaneum means you're constantly looking at things that feel immediately human — a wooden bed, a door frame, charred grain in an amphora — rather than Pompeii's more thoroughly ruined stonework. Herculaneum also has almost no fake "gladiator centurion" touts or organized scam operations outside its entrance — the lower tourist volume reduces the commercial pressure that makes the Pompeii approach stressful.

Il tentativo in italiano cambia il tono di quasi ogni interazione con il personale italiano — viene sempre percepito positivamente.
Le truffe classiche: venditore di braccialetti (mette un braccialetto al polso e chiede pagamento — toglilo senza parlare e cammina). Falso centurione al Colosseo (concorda il prezzo PRIMA della foto). Ristorante senza prezzi (richiedi sempre il listino prezzi prima di sederti). Taxi non autorizzato (solo taxi bianchi con luce sul tetto). Petizione-distrazione (qualcuno con foglio da firmare mentre un complice agisce sulla borsa — non fermarti mai). Nessuna di queste e' pericolosa fisicamente. Sono furti economici gestibili con informazione e attenzione.

The Italian city day structure that works: 7-8am at a bar for breakfast (cornetto and coffee, standing at the counter — this is how Romans, Florentines, and Milanese start every day, costs EUR 1.20-1.80). 9am museum or booked attraction (earliest slots have lowest crowd density). Noon: the city's streets and markets are at their most active — this is when covered markets are in full swing, when the streets between churches and squares have the most local life. 1pm: lunch at a trattoria without a tourist menu outside (sit-down lunch in Italy is still a serious meal, not a quick sandwich). 3-5pm: the heat of the afternoon in summer makes outdoor walking less pleasant — use this for air-conditioned museums you haven't pre-booked, or rest. 5-7pm: the passegiata hour — the city's best walking time, when residents emerge for the evening. 8pm onward: dinner.
