Infiorata di Spello โ€” when 60 teams work through the night creating flower paintings on the streets, and the entire masterpiece vanishes by noon

On the Saturday night before Corpus Domini (May/June โ€” date varies), 60 teams of Spello's citizens work through the entire night creating elaborate paintings on the town's streets using nothing but flower petals. Roses, carnations, broom flowers, lavender, ivy leaves, and wild herbs are sorted by color and arranged into religious scenes, abstract patterns, and reproductions of famous paintings โ€” each "canvas" covering 10-20 meters of cobblestone street. By dawn, a kilometer of the medieval town is carpeted in floral art of astonishing precision. At 11am, the Corpus Domini procession walks OVER the flower carpets โ€” the bishop, the priests, the faithful, their feet dissolving hours of work with every step. By noon, it's gone. The impermanence IS the point. Umbria guide → · Spello →

How to experience it

Saturday night (11pm-5am): Walk the streets while the teams work. This is intimate, atmospheric, and extraordinary โ€” watching citizens of all ages (grandmothers, teenagers, children) kneeling on cobblestones, placing individual petals with tweezers, arguing about color placement. The teams have been planning for months. The designs are secret until revealed. Bring a sweater (Umbrian nights are cool). Sunday dawn (5am-8am): The golden hours. The carpets are finished, the light is soft, the streets are quiet. This is when to photograph. By 9am the crowds arrive. Sunday 11am: The Corpus Domini procession โ€” the bishop processes over the flower carpets, followed by the faithful. The petals scatter. The art dies. The teams start planning next year.
