On the Saturday night before Corpus Domini (May/June — date varies), 60 teams of Spello's citizens work through the entire night creating elaborate paintings on the town's streets using nothing but flower petals. Roses, carnations, broom flowers, lavender, ivy leaves, and wild herbs are sorted by color and arranged into religious scenes, abstract patterns, and reproductions of famous paintings — each "canvas" covering 10-20 meters of cobblestone street. By dawn, a kilometer of the medieval town is carpeted in floral art of astonishing precision. At 11am, the Corpus Domini procession walks OVER the flower carpets — the bishop, the priests, the faithful, their feet dissolving hours of work with every step. By noon, it's gone. Getting there: Spello is on the Foligno-Perugia rail line (10min from Foligno, 30min from Perugia, 2h from Rome). By car: 2.5h from Rome, 2h from Florence. Arrive Saturday evening or very early Sunday morning. Stay: Spello (€60-100 — book weeks ahead for Infiorata weekend), Foligno (€50-80), Assisi (20min). The rest of the year: Spello is a beautiful walled Umbrian town worth visiting anytime — Roman gate (Porta Venere with the Towers of Properzio), Pinturicchio frescoes in the Cappella Baglioni (Santa Maria Maggiore), and excellent restaurants. Combine with: Assisi (15min), Spoleto (30min), Monti Sibillini (1h), Norcia truffles and cured meats (1h).
