Burano: definitely yes. Murano: nice but optional.
Burano's rainbow houses are extraordinary and it has a completely different feel from Venice. Murano is interesting if you care about glass, but the main street can feel like a tourist gauntlet.
โ Reasons to go
- Burano's coloured houses are genuinely stunning
- Murano glass-blowing demonstrations are fascinating
- Both islands feel calmer than Venice
- Fresh seafood restaurants on Burano
- The vaporetto ride across the lagoon is scenic
- Easy half-day combination trip
โ Reasons to skip
- Murano's main street is lined with aggressive glass shops
- Burano gets crowded 11amโ2pm (day-trippers)
- The vaporetto takes 40โ50 min each way
- Takes a half day minimum โ time away from Venice
- Burano lace is mostly machine-made now
- Murano glass quality varies wildly (much is imported)
How to do it right
Take the vaporetto 12 from Fondamente Nove. Visit Murano first (1 hour โ see a glass demo at a real fornace, skip the tourist shops). Continue to Burano (45 min there โ wander the colours, eat risotto de gรฒ at Trattoria al Gatto Nero). Return by 3pm to enjoy Venice's evening.
Bottom line
Burano is absolutely worth the trip โ the colours are real and it's a joyful half-day excursion. Murano is a nice add-on if you have time, but don't sacrifice Venice hours for it.
