Possible but tough — spring or autumn is much better
June is manageable. July is hard. August is brutal. If summer is your only option, Rome works — but you'll need a strategy to handle the heat and crowds.
✅ Reasons to go
- Long days — sightsee until 9pm
- Estate Romana festival: outdoor cinema, concerts, events
- Locals leave in August = quieter neighbourhoods
- Outdoor dining season at its peak
- Sunsets over the city are stunning
- Late-night gelato walks are magical
❌ Reasons to skip
- 35–40°C heat makes midday sightseeing miserable
- Colosseum/Vatican queues double in summer
- Hotel prices peak June–August
- Air quality drops in heat waves
- Some local restaurants close in August
- Mosquitoes in the evening near the Tiber
Summer survival strategy
Sightsee 8–11am and after 5pm. Spend midday (12–4pm) in air-conditioned museums, having a long lunch, or at the hotel pool. Rome's churches are always cool — duck into one whenever you overheat.
💡 Pro tip: Book an apartment with AC rather than a budget hotel without it. This is non-negotiable in Roman summer. Check the listing carefully.
Bottom line
June works, July is manageable with the right strategy, August is for the hardcore only. If you can visit April/May or September/October instead, do it.
