Is Rome Worth Visiting in Summer?

Rome in summer means 35–40°C heat, packed tourist sites, and Italians fleeing to the coast. But it also means long days, outdoor dining, and a city that doesn't sleep. Is it worth it?

Possible but tough — spring or autumn is much better

June is manageable. July is hard. August is brutal. If summer is your only option, Rome works — but you'll need a strategy to handle the heat and crowds.

✅ Reasons to go

  • Long days — sightsee until 9pm
  • Estate Romana festival: outdoor cinema, concerts, events
  • Locals leave in August = quieter neighbourhoods
  • Outdoor dining season at its peak
  • Sunsets over the city are stunning
  • Late-night gelato walks are magical

❌ Reasons to skip

  • 35–40°C heat makes midday sightseeing miserable
  • Colosseum/Vatican queues double in summer
  • Hotel prices peak June–August
  • Air quality drops in heat waves
  • Some local restaurants close in August
  • Mosquitoes in the evening near the Tiber

Summer survival strategy

Sightsee 8–11am and after 5pm. Spend midday (12–4pm) in air-conditioned museums, having a long lunch, or at the hotel pool. Rome's churches are always cool — duck into one whenever you overheat.

💡 Pro tip: Book an apartment with AC rather than a budget hotel without it. This is non-negotiable in Roman summer. Check the listing carefully.

Bottom line

June works, July is manageable with the right strategy, August is for the hardcore only. If you can visit April/May or September/October instead, do it.
