1. Not getting FULL insurance. The basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) included in most rentals has a €1,000-2,500 EXCESS — meaning YOU pay the first €1,000-2,500 of any damage. Solution: Buy full coverage (Super CDW/SCDW) that reduces excess to €0. Either from the rental company (€15-25/day) or from a third party like RentalCover.com (€5-8/day — MUCH cheaper). 2. Renting automatic without requesting it. 80% of Italian rental cars are MANUAL. Automatic costs 30-50% more and must be booked specifically. If you can't drive manual: book automatic 4+ weeks ahead.
3. Wrong fuel type. Benzina = petrol. Gasolio = diesel. Putting petrol in a diesel car = €2,000-5,000 engine repair charged to YOUR card. CHECK the fuel cap label. Ask at pickup. 4. ZTL fines. Enter a restricted zone → camera photographs your plate → rental company charges your card €100-300 per violation + €50 admin fee. Multiple entries = bankruptcy. Use Google Maps "avoid restricted areas" setting. 5. Not photographing the car at pickup. Pre-existing scratches = charged to you at return. PHOTOGRAPH every scratch, dent, and mark BEFORE leaving the lot. Email them to the rental company immediately.
6. Returning with wrong fuel level. Most Italian rentals are "full-to-full" — return it full or pay €3-4/liter (2x pump price). Fill up at the LAST station before the airport. 7. Late return. Even 30 minutes late = charged an extra day. 8. Toll roads without cash. Some toll booths are cash-only at the attended lane. Use Telepass lanes (credit card accepted) or carry €20 in coins/notes. 9. Parking tickets. Italian parking enforcement is EFFICIENT. Blue lines = pay. Don't risk it. 10. One-way drop-off fees. Pick up in Rome, drop off in Milan = €100-300 surcharge. Check before booking.
