Italy by bike — 10 cycling routes from Tuscan gravel roads to Dolomite passes to Sardinian coastal paths

Italy is the world's greatest cycling country. Not because of the Tour (that's France) but because of the LANDSCAPE: Tuscan hills with cypress-lined gravel roads (strade bianche). Dolomite passes that make grown cyclists weep. Coastal paths where the Mediterranean is 3 meters to your left for 24km. And the support infrastructure: bike-friendly hotels, mid-ride espresso stops, and mechanics in every town. Rail trails → · Bike rental →

The 10 routes

Easy/Flat: 1. Pista Ciclabile Ligure (24km, Sanremo→San Lorenzo): Flat coastal rail trail. Mediterranean 3m away. Tunnels with sea views. €15/day bike rental. The best "I don't cycle" cycling experience in Italy. 2. Ciclabile del Mincio (43km, Mantova→Peschiera/Garda): Flat river path connecting Mantova to Lake Garda. 3. Via Verde dei Trabocchi (42km, Abruzzo coast): Flat rail trail past traditional fishing platforms. Trabocco lunch stops.

Moderate/Hilly: 4. Chianti Loop (60-80km, Florence area): Rolling Tuscan hills through Chianti vineyards. Greve, Panzano, Radda, Castellina. Wine tasting stops. E-bike essential for non-serious cyclists. 5. Strade Bianche route (Siena area, 60-80km): The famous white gravel roads of the pro race — through Crete Senesi and Val d'Orcia. The most beautiful cycling landscape on Earth. Road or gravel bike. 6. Puglia coast (Bari→Lecce, 250km, 4-5 days): Flat to rolling, olive groves, trulli, masserie, coastal villages. E-bike or road bike.

Challenging/Mountain: 7. Stelvio Pass (from Bormio, 24km, 1,533m elevation gain): 48 hairpin turns. One of the legendary climbs of professional cycling. Only for serious cyclists. 8. Sella Ronda (Dolomites, 58km loop): 4 mountain passes in 1 day. 1,780m total climbing. Stunning but demanding. E-bike makes this accessible to fit amateurs. 9. Sardinia East Coast (Arbatax→Cala Gonone, 100km, 3 days): Wild coastal road, empty, coves for swimming, the most remote cycling in Italy. 10. Etna Circumnavigation (Sicily, 180km): Circle Mount Etna through lava fields, vineyards, citrus groves, and Sicilian villages. 3,000m total climbing over 2-3 days.
