First time in Italy โ€” everything nobody tells you until you're already confused

You've booked the flights. You have a Rome itinerary. You know about the Uffizi and the Amalfi Coast. What you don't know: lunch ends at 2:30pm and nothing reopens until 3:30-4pm. Shops close for riposo. Restaurants serve dinner from 7:30pm (south) or 8pm (north) โ€” arrive at 6pm and they'll look at you like you've lost your mind. Cappuccino after 11am marks you as a tourist (Italians drink espresso after meals, never cappuccino). Tipping is not expected (round up the bill, โ‚ฌ1-2 max โ€” leaving 20% American-style is bizarre here). This guide covers every unwritten rule so your first trip feels like your fifth.

The 10 rules nobody writes down

1. Meal times are law. Lunch: 12:30-2:30pm. Dinner: 7:30-10pm. Outside these windows, restaurants are closed. Plan accordingly or starve.

2. Coperto is not a scam. The โ‚ฌ1.50-3 cover charge on every restaurant bill is legal and normal. It covers bread, water refills, table service.

3. Water is free (from fountains). Italy has public drinking fountains (nasoni in Rome) everywhere. The water is tested and safe. Bring a bottle, save โ‚ฌ2 every refill. Packing list โ†’

4. Espresso at the bar. Stand, drink, leave. โ‚ฌ1-1.50. Sit at a table: โ‚ฌ3-5 for the same coffee. Italians stand. Stand.

5. Validate train tickets. Paper regional train tickets MUST be stamped in the yellow/green machines on the platform before boarding. Unstamped = โ‚ฌ50 fine. Digital tickets don't need stamping. Train guide โ†’

6. Dress code for churches. Covered shoulders and knees. Every major church. No exceptions. Carry a scarf. Packing list โ†’

7. August = closed. Many non-tourist restaurants, shops, and businesses close for 1-3 weeks around Ferragosto (August 15). Tourist infrastructure runs, but "your" restaurant might be in Sardinia.

8. Scusi and permesso. "Scusi" (excuse me, sorry). "Permesso" (let me pass โ€” on a crowded bus, in a narrow aisle). These two words solve 90% of social situations.

9. SIM card at the airport. Vodafone, TIM, or WindTre at any airport. โ‚ฌ20-30 for 30 days of data + calls. Do this before you leave the airport. Italy runs on WhatsApp and Google Maps โ€” both need data.

10. Slow down. The biggest first-timer mistake is trying to see everything. Slow travel guide โ†’. You're not collecting stamps. You're living in a country that perfected the art of doing nothing beautifully.
