Italy History Itinerary, 7 Days 2026: Walk the Ancient World

For ancient history, two places hold most of it: Rome, the heart of the empire, and the Bay of Naples, where Vesuvius froze whole Roman towns in time. So a week goes deep into these rather than scattering. From the Colosseum and Forum to the astonishingly intact streets of Pompeii and Herculaneum, this is the ancient world made vivid. A guide is what turns rubble into stories, so use one.
The two zones are ninety minutes apart by fast train, so no car. Base in Rome, then on the Bay (Naples or Sorrento), book the major sites and guides ahead, and wear sturdy shoes for a lot of ancient stone.
7-Day Italy History Itinerary
Days 1-3: Ancient Rome
The booked Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine, the Pantheon, the Capitoline Museums, and a day on the Appian Way with the catacombs. Add a guided ancient-Rome tour to make the stones speak. Rome at its oldest.
Day 4: Ostia Antica
An easy train to Ostia Antica, Rome's remarkably preserved ancient port, quieter than Pompeii and wonderfully walkable. A gentle, atmospheric day among intact streets and baths.
Days 5-7: The Bay of Naples
Fast train south, then Pompeii and the even better-preserved Herculaneum, the Naples Archaeological Museum for the treasures, and a climb up Vesuvius. The ancient world frozen mid-life.
Q&A: An Ancient History Week in Italy
Where is the best ancient history?
Rome for the imperial capital and the Bay of Naples for the Vesuvius towns, Pompeii and Herculaneum. Between them they hold most of the headline ancient sites, so going deep into two zones beats scattering.
Is a guide worth it?
Hugely; ancient sites are confusing piles of stone without context, and a good archaeologist-guide brings them to life. Even one guided visit per zone transforms what you understand afterward.
Pompeii or Herculaneum?
Both if you can: Pompeii is vast and famous, Herculaneum smaller but far better preserved, with intact upper floors and wood. Many find Herculaneum the more vivid; together they complete the picture.
What should I book?
Timed entry for the Colosseum complex and guided tours for Pompeii and Herculaneum, plus the Naples Archaeological Museum. Vesuvius summit access can also need booking in season.
When should I go?
Spring and fall for comfortable walking; the open ruins are brutal in summer heat with little shade. Winter is mild and quiet, ideal for unhurried site visits.
