Italy is not Bali. Italy is not Hawaii. But Italy has 7,600km of coastline, and when the autumn/winter storms push Mediterranean swells toward the western shores, Italy produces surprisingly good waves โ especially in Sardinia (Capo Mannu on the western coast gets genuine overhead swells), Liguria (Varazze has hosted European competitions), and the Versilia coast of Tuscany. The Italian surf scene is small but passionate โ surfers who ride waves with the Dolomites behind them (Adriatic winter) or paddle out past a medieval tower (Sardinia). The bonus: after your session, the post-surf meal is ITALIAN โ a โฌ12 pasta with clam sauce, not a โฌ3 noodle soup.
Surf Italy โ1. Capo Mannu (Sardinia, west coast): Italy's surf capital โ a consistent reef/point break that picks up Atlantic-generated swells entering the Mediterranean. Overhead+ waves in autumn/winter. The closest thing to a "real" surf spot in Italy. Surf camp + school available. 2. Buggerru (Sardinia, southwest): Beach break with multiple peaks โ the European Longboard Championship has been held here. 3. Varazze (Liguria): A reef break that produces fast, powerful waves when NW swells hit โ has hosted European surf competitions. 30min from Genova. 4. Levanto (Liguria, near Cinque Terre): Beach break โ the "surf town" of the Italian Riviera. Surf schools, board rental, post-surf Cinque Terre exploration. 5. Versilia coast (Tuscany โ Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio): Beach breaks โ smaller waves but consistent in autumn/winter. Beginners welcome. 6. Lido di Ostia (Rome): The capital's beach โ small waves but accessible (30min from Roma Termini). The Roman surf scene meets here. 7. Catania coast (Sicily): La Playa โ beach break with Etna behind you. The most dramatic surf backdrop in Europe.
Best season: October-March. Autumn/winter storms generate Mediterranean swells โ the western coasts (Sardinia, Liguria, Tuscany) receive the most consistent surf. Wave size: 0.5-2m most days; occasionally 2-3m+ during major storms (Sardinia). Water temperature: Winter 12-15ยฐC (full wetsuit 4/3mm), summer 22-26ยฐC (boardshorts). Summer surfing: Very flat most days. Occasional south swells bring small waves. SUP (stand-up paddle) is the summer alternative โ popular on all Italian coasts and lakes. Wind: Mistral (NW) and Scirocco (SE) are the main wave-generating winds. Check Magic Seaweed and Surfline for Italian forecasts.
Board rental: โฌ15-25/day (shortboard or longboard). Available at surf shops near main breaks. Surf schools: โฌ40-60 for a 2-hour group lesson including board + wetsuit. Available at Capo Mannu, Levanto, Varazze, Versilia. Surf camps (1 week): โฌ400-800 including accommodation, daily lessons, equipment. Sardinia has the most developed surf camp scene. Bring your board: Most airlines charge โฌ30-60 for a surfboard as sports equipment. Italian trains: boards technically not allowed on high-speed trains, but regional trains are more flexible (off-peak, wrap it well). The Italian surf attitude: Relaxed, friendly, no localism (the scene is too small for territorial behavior). Post-surf aperitivo is not optional โ it's part of the culture.
