Taxi Scams in Italy — How to Avoid (2026)

Rigged meters, "broken" meters, and the long route to your hotel. Protect yourself with 3 simple rules.

Common taxi scams

"Broken" meter: Driver says the meter is broken and quotes a flat rate (always inflated). Solution: the meter must work. If it's "broken," take a different taxi. Long route: Driver takes scenic detour to inflate the metered fare. Solution: follow on Google Maps. If the route looks wrong, say "Perché non via [direct street]?" Fake taxis: Unofficial cars at airports/stations offering rides. Always overpriced. Solution: use ONLY official white taxis from designated ranks — look for the "TAXI" light on the roof and the city logo/number on the door.

The 3 rules

1. Fixed rates from airports: Rome Fiumicino → center: €50. Ciampino → center: €31. Milan Malpensa → center: €95. Naples airport → center: €19-23. These are non-negotiable city-set fares. State your destination before getting in; the driver must use the fixed rate. 2. Meter for city rides: The meter must be running for all non-airport rides. Starting fare: €3-6 depending on city and time. 3. Use the app: Free Now (formerly mytaxi) and itTaxi work across Italy. App-booked rides are metered, tracked, and receipt-provided. No scam possible.

⚠️ Airport taxi rule: NEVER accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal saying "Taxi?" Walk outside to the official taxi rank and take the first car in line. Unlicensed drivers inside terminals charge 2-3× the official rate.
