Lago di Braies โ€” the turquoise Dolomite lake that Instagram made the most visited spot in South Tyrol, and how to see it without 5,000 other people in your photograph

Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) is a glacial lake at 1,496 meters in the Prags/Braies valley, surrounded by Dolomite peaks (the Croda del Becco/Seekofel, 2,810m, rises directly from the southern shore). The combination of turquoise water, a wooden boathouse, and a mountain backdrop created one of the most Instagrammed locations in the Alps โ€” the Italian TV series "Un Passo dal Cielo" (filmed here) and social media turned Braies from a quiet mountain lake into a phenomenon attracting over 10,000 visitors per day in summer. The lake is still magnificent. The crowds are manageable if you follow the rules below. And the 3.5km walk around the lake, especially at dawn, remains one of the most beautiful easy hikes in the Dolomites. Dolomites →

How to beat the crowds

Summer access control: From July to early September, the road is closed to private cars between 9:30am and 4pm. You MUST take a shuttle bus from Villabassa/Niederdorf (€10 return) or arrive before 9:30am. Arrive by 7am โ€” the lake is nearly empty, the light is magical, and the boathouse photograph has no tourists in it. Wooden boats: Rent a rowing boat (€16/30min) โ€” best before 9am when the lake surface is glass-still and the reflections are perfect. The lakeside walk (3.5km, 1h): Circle the entire lake on a flat trail โ€” the southern shore (beneath Croda del Becco) is the most dramatic and the least crowded. Off-season: September-October (autumn larches turn gold around the lake โ€” the best photographs are in October), May-June (snowmelt, higher water, fewer visitors). Winter: the lake freezes (no boat access, but the frozen surface is spectacular).

Practical

Getting there: Villabassa/Niederdorf station (Val Pusteria/Puster Valley line, 1.5h from Bolzano). Shuttle bus to lake (15min). By car: arrive before 9:30am in summer (parking at the hotel, €8/day). No accommodation at the lake except Hotel Lago di Braies (expensive, book 6+ months ahead, €200-400/night โ€” but staying here means you're AT the lake before dawn). Stay in Villabassa/Niederdorf or Monguelfo/Welsberg (€60-120/night). Combine with: Alta Via 1 (Braies is the starting point), Val Pusteria (Brunico/Bruneck medieval town, 15min), Plan de Corones/Kronplatz (skiing/panorama, 20min), Tre Cime di Lavaredo (40min).
