There is a ziggurat in Sardinia. Not a metaphor, not a resemblance — an actual stepped platform with a ramp, structurally similar to the Mesopotamian ziggurats of Ur and Uruk, built around 3000 BC by a pre-nuragic civilization on a limestone plain near Sassari. Monte d'Accoddi predates the Great Pyramid of Giza by 500 years. It's the only structure of its type in the entire Western Mediterranean. Nobody knows who built it, why it looks Mesopotamian, or what rituals were performed on the platform at the top. Built in two phases: the first (Ozieri culture, ~3500 BC) was a rectangular temple. Around 3000 BC (Abealzu-Filigosa culture), a larger stepped platform was built OVER the original, encasing it — like the Mesoamerican practice of building pyramids over older pyramids, except this is 3,000 years earlier and 8,000km away.
Surrounding features: A large limestone slab (possible altar or sacrifice stone), a carved stone sphere (menhir), and a dolmen (megalithic table structure). Traces of a settlement around the monument. The mystery: how does a Mesopotamian-style structure end up in Sardinia? Some archaeologists argue independent invention. Others suggest trade connections across the Mediterranean that we haven't fully documented. The debate continues.
