Monte Isola — Europe's largest lake island, car-free, 1,700 residents, fishermen and olive groves, and the memory of Christo's Floating Piers that made the world notice Lake Iseo for 16 days

Monte Isola (4.5 km², 600m peak) is the largest lake island in Europe, rising from the center of Lake Iseo in Lombardy. It is entirely car-free: 1,700 residents navigate by foot, bicycle, or small motorbus. The island has fishing villages (Peschiera Maraglio, Carzano, Siviano), olive groves, chestnut forests, and the Santuario della Madonna della Ceriola (16th century) at the summit with panoramic views over the lake, the Franciacorta hills, and the pre-Alpine peaks. In 2016, Christo's The Floating Piers connected Monte Isola to the mainland via saffron-colored fabric walkways on the water — 1.2 million people walked on water for 16 days. The piers are gone but the memory (and the increased awareness of Monte Isola's existence) remains. Lombardy →

What to see

Peschiera Maraglio: The main ferry landing — a fishing village with net-drying sheds (naècc — traditional fishing nets for sardina, the lake sardine, are still made here). Walk or cycle the island perimeter (9km, 2-3h): The path circles the island through all the villages — Sensole (the most picturesque), Siviano (medieval castle tower), Carzano. Santuario della Madonna della Ceriola (summit, 600m): A 16th-century church on the peak — the 360° panorama covers the lake, Isola di San Paolo (the tiny private island below), the Franciacorta wine hills, and the Adamello glacier on clear days. Walk from Peschiera (1.5h steep) or bus partway. Sardina essiccata: Monte Isola's traditional product — sun-dried lake sardines preserved in oil. Buy from fishermen.

Practical

Getting there: Ferry from Sulzano (east shore, 5min, every 20min, €4 return) or Sale Marasino. Sulzano is on the Brescia-Edolo railway (45min from Brescia). By car: park in Sulzano (€5/day). NO CARS on the island. Rent bikes at Peschiera landing (€5-10/day). Stay: €50-90/night (several small hotels and B&Bs). Eat: Trattoria del Pesce (Peschiera — lake fish, €25-35). Combine with: Franciacorta (20min from Sulzano — sparkling wine), Brescia (45min), Bergamo (40min), Clusone (30min).
