The MAXXI (Museo nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo) is Rome's national contemporary art museum โ designed by Zaha Hadid (2010, her first major Italian commission). The building: flowing concrete walls that curve, overlap, and cantilever โ no right angles, no straight corridors, every surface a gesture. The art: rotating exhibitions of architecture, design, photography, and contemporary art (past: William Kentridge, Tomรกs Saraceno, Anish Kapoor). โฌ12. Even if you don't care about contemporary art: the BUILDING alone justifies the visit.
The architecture: Walk the main gallery โ the floor slopes, walls lean, ceilings cantilever 30m over the void. Hadid designed it as a fluid landscape, not a box. The permanent collection: Italian and international contemporary (modest compared to Fondazione Prada or MADRE Naples). The exhibitions: Architecture + art, rotating 3-4x/year, consistently excellent. Practical: Via Guido Reni 4a (Flaminio area). โฌ12. Tue-Sun 11am-7pm. Tram 2 from Piazzale Flaminio. 1-1.5h.
