Neive is one of the Borghi più belli d'Italia and one of the four communes of Barbaresco DOCG (alongside Barbaresco, Treiso, and San Rocco Seno d'Elvio). The village sits on a hilltop in the Langhe, surrounded by the vineyards that produce one of Italy's greatest wines. The Santo Stefano vineyard (cru) โ visible from the village walls โ is one of the most celebrated single-vineyard sites in Piemonte. Inside the medieval walls: a clock tower, stone houses that double as wine cellars, and the kind of views (undulating vine-covered hills, distant Alpine peaks) that make Langhe the Italian Burgundy. Plan my Langhe wine trip →The borgo: Circular medieval plan โ enter through the gate, walk the single main street to the Torre dell'Orologio (clock tower). Stone houses, small piazzas, and vineyard views from every edge. Wine tasting: Bruno Giacosa (legendary โ the Asili and Santo Stefano Barbaresco are among Italy's greatest reds, €25-50 tasting by appointment), Castello di Neive (the noble estate โ visitor-friendly, €15-30), Rivetti (Barbaresco La Spinona โ small, personal). Barbaresco wine: 100% Nebbiolo, aged 26 months minimum (Riserva 50 months). The Santo Stefano cru from Neive is known for power and structure (vs. the elegance of Asili in Barbaresco village). Prices retail: Barbaresco €20-45, Riserva €35-80, top cru (Giacosa, Gaja) €80-300+.
Getting there: car from Alba (10min), Asti (25min), Turin (1.5h). No train. Stay: €60-120/night (agriturismi with vineyard views). Eat: La Luna nel Pozzo (€30-45 โ tajarin al ragù di Barbaresco, bollito misto), Donna Selvatica (€50-70, Michelin). Combine with: Alba (10min โ truffle capital), Barbaresco village (5min โ Gaja, Produttori del Barbaresco), Barolo (25min โ the other great Nebbiolo), Langhe drives (the wine roads between Neive, Barbaresco, and Barolo are Italy's most scenic).
