Until the 1990s, Nero d'Avola was Sicily's workhorse grape — used to add color and alcohol to weak northern Italian and French blends, sold in bulk, nobody cared about its name. Then a generation of Sicilian winemakers (Planeta, Gulfi, COS, Arianna Occhipinti) decided to make serious wine from it. What they discovered: grown on the right terroir (the limestone and clay soils of southeast Sicily — Avola, Noto, Ragusa, Vittoria), harvested at the right moment (before the sugar overwhelms everything), and vinified with care, Nero d'Avola produces wines of extraordinary warmth, depth, and Mediterranean character — dark cherry, plum, chocolate, black olive, dried herbs, and the specific minerality of Sicilian volcanic and limestone soil. At €8-20 retail, Nero d'Avola is one of Italy's greatest wine values. Sicily guide →
Plan my Sicily wine trip →Planeta (multiple estates): The family that modernized Sicilian wine. Their Santa Cecilia Nero d'Avola (Noto) is benchmark — rich, polished, age-worthy. Visitor-friendly estates in Noto and Menfi. €15-30 tasting. Gulfi (Chiaramonte Gulfi, Ragusa): Vito Catania's single-vineyard Nero d'Avola wines (NeroSanlorè, NeroBufaleffj, NeroMàccarj) are among the finest in Sicily — each from a different terroir, each a different expression. €15-25. COS (Vittoria): Giambattista Cilia and Giusto Occhipinti (father of Arianna) make natural-leaning Cerasuolo di Vittoria (Nero d'Avola + Frappato) in amphora. Radical and beautiful. €15-25. Arianna Occhipinti (Vittoria): The young star of natural Sicilian wine — her SP68 Rosso is juicy, alive, and costs €12. Her Il Frappato is legendary.
