The Palio is not a tourist event. It is a genuine civic competition between Siena's 17 contrade (neighborhoods), each with its own church, museum, fountain, flag, and identity stretching back centuries. Sienesi are BORN into their contrada and carry it for life โ their loyalty to their neighborhood is more intense than any football fandom you've encountered. Twice a year (July 2 and August 16), ten of the 17 contrade race bareback horses around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo in a 90-second explosion of medieval pageantry, raw emotion, and genuine danger. Jockeys are thrown. Horses run riderless. The winning contrada celebrates for days. The losing contrade mourn, plot, and wait for next time. You can watch for free, standing in the center of the piazza. Siena guide → · Tuscany →
Plan my Siena trip →The draw: 3-4 days before the race, 10 of the 17 contrade are selected by lot (7 that didn't race last time + 3 drawn from the remaining 10). Horses are assigned to contrade by lot โ you race what you're given. The jockeys (fantini): Professional riders, mostly from Sardinia, hired by the contrade. Deals, bribes, alliances, and betrayals between contrade are legendary and absolutely real. The race: 3 laps of the Piazza del Campo (~90 seconds). The horses run on a packed-earth track laid over the brick piazza. San Martino corner is dangerous โ falls are common. A horse can win without a jockey (cavallo scosso) โ the first horse across the finish line wins, whether or not a rider is on it.
Free (center of the piazza): Arrive by 2pm for the 7:45pm race (July) or 7pm race (August). The piazza fills gradually. By 5pm, the gates close and you're packed in. No shade, no water fountains, no toilets. Bring water, sun protection, patience. The wait is long. The pageant (Corteo Storico) before the race is spectacular. The race itself is a visceral 90-second explosion. Paid seats (palchi): Balcony seats around the piazza โ €350-800+ depending on location. Book through agencies (Palio Viaggi, SienaHotels.com) months in advance. Tickets sell out fast. Practice races (prove): In the days before the Palio, practice races are run in the piazza at 9am and 7:45pm. These are FREE, uncrowded, and give you the Palio experience without the 8-hour wait.
Dates: July 2 and August 16, every year. Arrive in Siena the day before to see the trial races, contrada dinners (some are open to visitors โ ask at contrada museums), and the blessing of the horses in the contrada churches (the horse is invited INTO the church). Hotels: book 3-6 months ahead for Palio week. Prices triple. Alternative: stay in the Chianti countryside and drive in for the day. Getting there: Siena is 1.5h from Florence by bus (more reliable than the slow train). Combine with: Siena exploration (the contrada museums are open year-round โ visit to understand the social fabric), San Gimignano (30min), Chianti wine country.
