The Pantheon is the most important building in Western architecture. Built by Emperor Hadrian around 125 AD, its unreinforced concrete dome (43.3m diameter) was the largest in the world for 1,300 years โ until Brunelleschi built Florence's cathedral dome in 1436 (and even then, Brunelleschi studied the Pantheon to figure out how). The oculus โ the 9m-wide circular opening at the dome's apex โ is the building's only light source. Rain falls through it onto the marble floor (drains handle it). On April 21 (Rome's birthday), a shaft of sunlight strikes the entrance at noon. It survives because it was converted into a church in 609 AD. Raphael is buried here. Seven Italian kings rest in its side chapels. And entering through those massive bronze doors into the rotunda โ seeing the coffered dome open to the sky โ remains one of humanity's great spatial experiences.
Visit the Pantheon โNEW since July 2023: the Pantheon now charges entry. โฌ5 adults. Under 18 EU and residents of Rome: FREE. EU 18-25: โฌ2. First Monday of each month: FREE for all. Buy online: pantheon.cultura.gov.it โ timed slots. Walk-up also possible (queue 10-30min in peak). Hours: Monday-Saturday 9:00-19:00, Sunday 9:00-18:00. Sunday masses at 10:30am (tourists may attend but respectful behavior required). How long: 15-30 minutes (it's one room โ but what a room). Audio guide: โฌ5, helpful for understanding the engineering and symbolism. FREE alternative: Stand in the Piazza della Rotonda outside and look through the doors โ the view from the portico into the rotunda is spectacular even from outside.
The Dome: Look UP. The 5 rows of 28 coffers (recessed panels) decrease in size toward the oculus, creating the illusion of greater height. The concrete was mixed with progressively lighter volcanic aggregate toward the top (heavy basalt at the base, light pumice at the oculus) โ ancient Roman engineering genius that we still study today. The Oculus: 9m diameter, open to the sky. When it rains, water falls onto the slightly convex floor and drains through 22 small holes. Stand directly under the oculus and look up โ the circle of sky is profoundly moving. Raphael's Tomb: The painter died in 1520, aged 37, and was buried here by his own wish. The inscription reads (in Latin): "Here lies that famous Raphael by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying, feared herself to die." His fiancรฉe Maria Bibbiena is buried nearby. The Royal Tombs: Vittorio Emanuele II (first king of unified Italy), Umberto I, and Queen Margherita (yes, the pizza queen) are in side chapels.
The dome is a perfect sphere: 43.3m diameter = exactly the height from floor to oculus. If the dome continued as a full sphere, it would touch the floor. The concrete: Roman opus caementicium โ volcanic ash (pozzolana), lime, water, and aggregate. This concrete has STRENGTHENED over 2,000 years (scientists discovered in 2023 that lime clasts in the mix enable self-healing when cracks form and rainwater seeps in). No reinforcing steel, no rebar, no modern engineering. The dome's secret is its weight distribution: thick walls (6m) at the base, progressively thinner toward the top, with the coffers reducing weight, and the oculus eliminating the heaviest point at the apex. Every architect from Brunelleschi to Michelangelo to Frank Lloyd Wright studied this building.
Best time: 9am (opening, fewest visitors) or late afternoon (golden light through the oculus). Rain: Visiting during rain is magical โ a column of water falls from the sky through the oculus. The floor around the center gets wet (they rope it off). April 21: On Rome's traditional birthday (Natale di Roma), the midday sun creates a beam through the oculus that illuminates the entrance portal โ a deliberate Hadrianic design. Combine with: Piazza Navona (5min walk โ Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers), Sant'Eustachio coffee (2min walk โ Rome's best espresso, since 1938), Largo di Torre Argentina (5min โ the spot where Julius Caesar was assassinated, now a cat sanctuary in the ruins).
