Pescasseroli โ€” the village inside Italy's oldest national park, where the Marsican brown bear has survived by 60 individuals and the mountains don't negotiate

The Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise (1922) is Italy's oldest and most important national park. Pescasseroli (1,167m) is its capital โ€” the headquarters, the visitor center, the base for hiking into valleys where 50-60 Marsican brown bears (the rarest bear subspecies in the world, found NOWHERE else) live alongside wolves, Apennine chamois, golden eagles, and deer. The park exists BECAUSE of the bear โ€” and the bear exists because of the park. One of the most successful conservation stories in European history, still precarious, still requiring the mountain villages to coexist with a predator that occasionally visits their orchards at night.

The wildlife

Marsican brown bear (Ursus arctos marsicanus): ~60 individuals. Endemic โ€” found only in this park and surrounding areas. Smaller and less aggressive than Alpine brown bears. Sightings are rare but possible โ€” early morning or dusk, on forest trails between 1,200-1,800m. The visitor center in Pescasseroli has a wildlife area where injured/orphaned bears can be seen (not ideal, but educational). Wolves: Recolonized naturally from the park into the rest of central Italy. Packs active throughout the park โ€” tracks visible on trails, howls audible at dusk. Chamois (Camoscio appenninico): Subspecies found only here โ€” 700+ individuals on the rocky ridges above 1,800m. Visible with binoculars from the Val di Rose trail.

Hiking

Val di Rose (from Civitella Alfedena, 30 min from Pescasseroli): THE best wildlife hike โ€” 3-4h loop through beech forests and alpine meadows. Chamois sightings common. Bear sightings occasional. Camosciara (from Villetta Barrea): Waterfalls + ancient beech forest (UNESCO). Easy, family-friendly, 1-2h. Monte Amaro di Opi (2,058m): Summit hike, 5-6h round trip, panoramic views of the entire park. Lake Barrea: Artificial lake surrounded by forest โ€” walking paths, swimming in summer.

Practical

From Rome: A25โ†’Pescina exitโ†’SS83 (2h). No useful train โ€” car essential. Visitor center (Pescasseroli): Park maps, guided walks schedule, wildlife info. โ‚ฌ5 for wildlife area. Best season: May-October (hiking). September-October (bear activity highest โ€” they feed intensively before winter). Stay 3+ nights: The park rewards patience. One day = hiking. Two days = wildlife. Three days = understanding why these mountains were saved. Abruzzo complete โ†’
