Most visitors to Piazza Armerina see the Villa Romana del Casale (5km south) and leave without entering the town. This is a mistake. Piazza Armerina (population 20,000, 697m altitude) is one of the finest Norman-founded towns in the Sicilian interior: the Cattedrale (1604, dome visible from every approach), the Palio dei Normanni (August 12-14 โ a costumed tournament recreating Roger the Norman's arrival in 1061, with 600 participants in medieval costume, jousting, and a battle reenactment), and a centro storico of baroque churches and medieval lanes climbing to the castle quarter. The interior of Sicily โ the "real" Sicily of wheat fields, hilltop towns, and summer heat โ starts here. Sicily โ
Plan my Sicily trip โCattedrale (1604): The dominant building โ a massive dome on a hilltop visible from 10km. Inside: a painted wooden crucifix (the Croce Dipinta, 15th century) and a Byzantine-influenced Madonna (Madonna delle Vittorie, Norman era โ reputedly given by Pope Nicholas II to Count Roger). Palio dei Normanni (August 12-14): 3 days โ August 12: procession and quintana (horseback ring-jousting). August 13: the Battle (reenactment of the Norman victory over the Moors in the piazza). August 14: the entry of Count Roger. 600+ costumed participants, horses, trumpets. The centro storico: Climb from Piazza Garibaldi to the Castello Aragonese ruins โ churches at every turn (San Giovanni dei Rodi โ Knights of Malta), medieval arches, and the panoramic viewpoints over the Erei mountains.
Getting there: Car from Catania (1.5h), Agrigento (1.5h), Enna (30min). Bus from Enna (30min). Stay: โฌ40-65/night. Eat: Al Fogher (€30-45 โ traditional interior Sicilian), Trattoria La Ruota (€20-30). Combine with: Villa del Casale (5km โ the mosaics, essential), Enna (30min โ highest city), Caltagirone (30min โ ceramic staircase), Agrigento (1.5h).
