The Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) is the SMALLEST of Rome's seven hills and the most IMPORTANT. The Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus stood here โ the most sacred temple in Rome, where triumphant generals climbed to give thanks. In 1536, Pope Paul III asked Michelangelo to redesign the hilltop piazza. Michelangelo created a trapezoidal space with a star-pattern pavement (the oval stellate โ a cosmological symbol), placed the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius at the exact center, and designed three palace facades to enclose the space. He never saw it finished. He died in 1564. The piazza was completed decades later to his drawings. The result: the most perfectly proportioned civic space in the Western world.
The cordonata (stairway): Michelangelo's gently sloping ramp from the street below โ designed so you ascend SLOWLY, the piazza revealing itself as you rise. At the top: the two Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux) flanking the entrance. Marcus Aurelius (original inside Musei Capitolini, copy in piazza): The ONLY surviving ancient equestrian bronze from Rome โ it survived because medieval Christians thought it was Constantine (a Christian emperor). Had they known it was Marcus Aurelius (a pagan), they'd have melted it. Musei Capitolini (the world's OLDEST public museum, 1471): The Capitoline Wolf (the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus โ the symbol of Rome). The Dying Gaul. The Capitoline Venus. Caravaggio's Fortune Teller and St. John the Baptist. The Tabularium (underground gallery connecting the two palazzi โ windows overlooking the Forum below). โฌ16.
Behind Piazza Venezia โ walk up the cordonata (the wide sloping stair). Or take the steep stairs from Via del Teatro di Marcello (the back entrance โ fewer people, more dramatic arrival from the Forum side). Musei Capitolini: โฌ16, open Tue-Sun 9:30-19:30. Allow 2 hours. The terrace of Palazzo dei Conservatori: A cafรฉ with a view over the city that rivals any rooftop bar. At night: The piazza is LIT and empty โ Michelangelo's geometry glows. Walk up after dinner.
