Pienza vs Montalcino — the pope’s cheese town versus the king’s wine town

Pienza: pecorino. Montalcino: Brunello. Together they’re the Val d’Orcia’s twin peaks.

Plan your trip →

Pienza

Pius II’s ideal city (1459). Piazza Pio II. Pecorino aged in walnut leaves, ash, grape must. Via dell’Amore viewpoint. 2,100 people. 2–3 hours.

Montalcino

Brunello country. Fortezza enoteca (€5–15/glass). Abbazia di Sant’Antimo (Gregorian chant). 5,000 people. Half day with wine tasting.

Verdict

Don’t choose. They’re 20 min apart. Do both in a Val d’Orcia day. But if forced: Pienza for the cheese+view, Montalcino for the wine.
