Portovenere sits at the southern tip of the Cinque Terre promontory, facing the island of Palmaria across a narrow channel. It's not technically one of the five villages, but it's included in the same UNESCO site, connected by boat, and arguably more dramatic than several of the five. The waterfront (Palazzata a mare) is a wall of tall, colored houses built as a sea defense โ their backs to the harbor, their rainbow facades facing the open Ligurian Sea. At the tip of the headland: the Chiesa di San Pietro (6th century, rebuilt 12th century) โ a black-and-white striped church perched on the rocks at the furthest point, with waves crashing below and the Gothic nave open to the sky on stormy days. Byron's Grotto (Grotta Arpaia) is the sea cave below the church where (tradition says) Lord Byron swam across the Gulf to visit Shelley in Lerici โ a 7.5km open-water swim that may or may not have happened but is very Byron. Plan my Cinque Terre trip →Chiesa di San Pietro: The cliff church โ black-and-white striped Ligurian Gothic on the outside, austere early-medieval on the inside. The position (waves, rocks, open sea on three sides) makes it one of the most dramatically sited churches in Italy. Free entry. Byron's Grotto: Below San Pietro โ a sea cave named for Byron's reputed swim. Viewable from the path. The Palazzata: Walk the waterfront from the harbor โ the colored houses (12th-13th century, built as a defensive wall) with their painted facades and the Doria castle above. Castello Doria: Genoese castle at the highest point โ panoramic terrace. €5. Isola Palmaria: Boat from the harbor (5min, €5) โ wild beaches, hiking trails, the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto โ boat trip €10-15). Swimming: From the rocks below San Pietro (dramatic but rough entry) or from Palmaria's beaches.
Getting there: Bus from La Spezia (30min, every 20min). Boat from Cinque Terre villages (Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti โ seasonal, €15-25). No train to Portovenere. By car: 15min from La Spezia (parking at the entrance โ limited, arrive early in summer). Stay: €80-150/night. Eat: Locanda Lorena (Palmaria island โ seafood on the terrace over the water, boat service included, €40-55 โ book ahead), Osteria La Marina (€25-40). Combine with: Cinque Terre (boat connections), Lerici (ferry across the Gulf, 30min), La Spezia (15min bus).
