Nervi is the eastern seaside quarter of Genoa, a former fishing village that in the Belle Époque became the Riviera's most elegant health resort. The Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi โ a 2km cliff-top walkway carved into the rock above the sea โ is the most beautiful urban coastal walk in Italy: waves crash below, the Portofino promontory floats in the distance, and the path connects parks, villas, and art galleries without ever touching a road. The Parchi di Nervi (three villa gardens merged into one public park) contain the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Rubens, Magnasco, De Pisis), the Wolfsoniana (decorative arts and design, 1880-1945), and the Raccolte Frugone (19th-century Ligurian painting). The rose garden blooms May-June. Genoa guide →
Plan my Genoa trip →Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi: 2km cliff walk from the Porticciolo (small harbor) east along the coast. Benches, viewpoints, and the drama of waves hitting rocks below. Parchi di Nervi: Three interconnected villa gardens โ Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Villa Saluzzo Serra, €6), Wolfsoniana (Villa Saluzzo Giustiniani, €5 โ remarkable 20th-century design collection), Raccolte Frugone (Villa Grimaldi Fassio, €6). The rose garden (Roseto): Part of the parks โ 6,000 rose bushes, peak May-June. Porticciolo di Nervi: The tiny harbor at the western end โ swimming off the rocks, a few restaurants, and the start of the passeggiata.
Getting there: Nervi station (Genoa-La Spezia line, 12min from Genova Brignole). Free to walk the passeggiata and parks. Galleries: €5-6 each. Duration: 2-3 hours (walk + one gallery + park). Eat: Marinella (seafood, porticciolo, €30-45). Combine with: Genoa centro (12min train), Camogli (20min train), Portofino (30min).
