Reggio Calabria โ€” the city at the toe of Italy's boot that holds the two most beautiful Greek statues in existence, has the "finest kilometer in Italy" (D'Annunzio), and watches Sicily float on the Strait at sunset

The Bronzi di Riace (Riace Bronzes, 450 BC) are the reason to come to Reggio Calabria, and they are sufficient reason. Two life-size Greek bronze warriors, found by a snorkeler off the coast of Riace in 1972, in almost perfect condition โ€” their muscles, veins, and facial expressions of such anatomical precision and aesthetic power that they are widely considered the finest surviving examples of Greek classical sculpture. They stand in a dedicated room of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Magna Grecia, and looking at them โ€” their calm authority, their physical perfection, their 2,500-year-old eyes still meeting yours โ€” is one of the great art experiences in Italy. The Lungomare Falcomatร  โ€” a seafront promenade with the Strait of Messina, Etna, and the Sicilian coast visible โ€” was called "the finest kilometer in Italy" by D'Annunzio. Calabria →

What to see

Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Magna Grecia: The Riace Bronzes are in a climate-controlled room on the upper floor โ€” you enter through an airlock (to maintain humidity) and face them directly. Warrior A (the younger) and Warrior B (the bearded elder). Their copper lips, silver teeth, and inlaid glass eyes are original. €8. Also in the museum: the Testa di Filosofo (Philosopher's Head โ€” possibly Pythagoras), Greek pottery, terracottas from the Locri temples, and the Pinax (votive tablets from Locri โ€” scenes of Persephone's abduction). Lungomare Falcomatร : Walk the 1.7km seafront โ€” Sicily is 3km across the Strait (Messina visible, Etna behind). At sunset, the Fata Morgana (a mirage that makes the Sicilian coast appear to float above the water) is sometimes visible. The Cathedral: Rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake (which destroyed 90% of the city) โ€” Art Nouveau interior. Bergamotto: Reggio is the world's only significant bergamot production zone โ€” the citrus fruit that flavors Earl Grey tea. The Museo del Bergamotto tells the story.
