The Sacri Monti โ€” 9 sacred mountains with 1,200 life-size statues in hillside chapels: UNESCO's most extraordinary and least-known Italian World Heritage Site

Scattered across the Piedmontese and Lombard foothills, 9 "Sacred Mountains" contain over 1,200 life-size painted terracotta and wooden statues arranged in chapel-theaters that tell Biblical stories with cinematic intensity. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries as a Counter-Reformation alternative to pilgrimage to the Holy Land (then under Ottoman control), each Sacro Monte recreates Jerusalem, Calvary, or the life of a saint through a series of 15-45 chapels climbing a wooded hillside. You walk from chapel to chapel through forests, and at each one you peer through a grille at a frozen theatrical scene โ€” life-size figures with glass eyes, real hair, painted skin, in settings of remarkable emotional power. The Sacro Monte di Varallo (the oldest, 1486) has 45 chapels with 800+ statues โ€” including a Crucifixion scene so visceral that visitors have been known to weep. UNESCO inscribed all 9 in 2003. Almost no foreign tourists visit any of them.

โ›ช THE 9 SACRI MONTI

Varallo Sesia (Piemonte): The oldest and most important โ€” 45 chapels, 800+ statues. The "New Jerusalem" recreates the Holy Land. Chapel 38 (Crucifixion) and Chapel 45 (Holy Sepulchre) are masterpieces of emotional realism. The figures by Giovanni d'Enrico and Tanzio da Varallo rival Bernini for dramatic power. Not to miss. Orta San Giulio (Piemonte): 20 chapels dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, overlooking the enchanting Lake Orta โ€” the loveliest setting of any Sacro Monte. The descent to the lake + island of San Giulio is magical. Varese (Lombardia): 14 chapels climbing through forest to the sanctuary at the summit โ€” the most theatrical setting, each chapel a mini-stage with extraordinary Baroque statues. Also: Crea (Piemonte), Ghiffa (Lake Maggiore), Domodossola (Calvario), Belmonte (Ivrea), Ossuccio (Lake Como), Oropa (near Biella โ€” the most spectacular mountain sanctuary in the Alps). Each is FREE to visit โ€” open daily, dawn to dusk. The chapels have iron grilles you peer through (no entry to protect the statues).

Which to visit if limited on time: Varallo (the masterpiece) + Orta (the most beautiful setting). Both in one day from Milan or Turin. Getting there: By car: Varallo is 1.5h from Milan, 1.5h from Turin. Orta is 1h from Milan, 1.5h from Turin. Public transport: limited (regional trains to Varallo Sesia from Novara; Orta-Miasino station on the Novara-Domodossola line). A car gives flexibility to combine 2-3 in a day. How long per site: 1-2 hours each (the walk between chapels is the experience โ€” allow time to linger). Best season: May-October (chapels open reliably, forest paths pleasant). Combine with: Lake Orta + Lake Maggiore, the Piedmont wine country, Turin. Hidden gems โ†’ ยท UNESCO โ†’
