The Santuario della Madonna di San Luca sits on a hill 289m above Bologna. Connected to the city by the longest portico in the world: 3.8km, 666 arches, climbing from Porta Saragozza to the sanctuary. Built 1674-1793 to protect pilgrims from rain and sun during the annual procession of the Madonna's icon down to the city. UNESCO listed Bologna's porticoes in 2021 — and this is the crown jewel. The walk takes 45-60 minutes uphill. Every arch frames the next. The rhythm of walking under continuous vaulted space for nearly 4 kilometers does something to your perception that's hard to describe and impossible to forget.
Start: Arco del Meloncello (Via Saragozza). The portico begins at city level with a monumental arch by Carlo Francesco Dotti (1732) — a Baroque gateway marking the transition from city to pilgrimage. The first 2km are relatively flat — the portico runs along the road, arches regular, rhythm steady. The last 1.8km CLIMB — the arches narrow, the gradient steepens, the views of Bologna appear in glimpses between columns. 15 chapels (Misteri del Rosario) mark the ascent — each containing a painted scene of the Rosary mysteries. The pilgrims who built this walked it while PRAYING, one mystery per chapel. At the top: the sanctuary, and the view.
The sanctuary (1723, Dotti): Elliptical plan — unusual, almost theatrical. The icon of the Madonna di San Luca (attributed to St. Luke, tradition says — actually 12th century Byzantine) is above the altar. The annual descent: Each May, the icon is carried in procession DOWN through all 666 arches to the cathedral in Bologna — the city welcomes the Madonna home for a week. The view from the terrace: Bologna spreads below — the two towers, the red roofs, the Apennines behind. On clear days: the Po Valley to the Alps.
Walk up (45-60 min), bus down (San Luca Express, €5 return, every 30 min from Piazza Maggiore). Or walk both ways if your legs agree. Best time: Late afternoon — walk up, arrive for sunset, bus down.
