The Scala dei Turchi (Staircase of the Turks) is a promontory of brilliant white marl (a soft clay-limestone composite) on the coast between Agrigento and Realmonte, eroded by wind and waves into smooth, sweeping steps that descend from the clifftop to the sea. The name comes from the Saracen (Turkish) pirates who reportedly used the natural steps to climb from the sea and raid the interior. The white marl against the turquoise Mediterranean creates a visual contrast so strong it looks filtered โ it isn't. Sunset is the time: the marl turns from white to gold to pink as the sun drops into the sea behind Capo Rossello. Erosion is a concern โ the marl is soft and foot traffic accelerates damage. Access has been restricted at times (check locally). Walk gently, don't carve your name, and understand that this geological formation took 2 million years to create and could be destroyed in decades by careless tourism. Sicily →
Plan my Sicily trip →The descent: From the parking area, a path leads down to the beach (10min). The white marl steps are to the right (west). Walk onto the smooth surfaces โ the steps are broad and gradual, and you can lie on the warm marl or sit on the ledges above the water. Swimming: The water below the scala is clear, shallow near shore, and clean. Swim from the base of the marl steps. Sunset: Face west from the top of the scala โ the sun drops behind the headland and the marl surface catches the last light. Morning: Fewer people, the marl is cool, the light is clean. Responsible visiting: Don't walk on the most fragile overhangs. Don't leave trash. Don't carve the marl. Respect any access barriers.
Getting there: Car from Agrigento (15min west on SS115). Parking: roadside (free but limited) or private lots (€3-5). Bus: SAIS or TUA from Agrigento (infrequent โ check schedules). Free to visit (when open โ check locally for access status). What to bring: Water shoes (the marl is smooth but rocky patches exist), sunscreen, water. Duration: 1-2 hours. Combine with: Agrigento/Valle dei Templi (15min โ the obvious combination: Greek temples + white cliffs in one day).
