Sirmione occupies a 4km peninsula jutting into the southern end of Lake Garda, so narrow in places that you can see water on both sides. The entrance is through the Castello Scaligero (13th century) โ a rare example of a medieval castle built ON water, with a fortified harbor. The Grotte di Catullo (the "Grottoes of Catullus" โ not actually grottoes, but the ruins of a massive Roman villa, 1st century BC-1st century AD, the largest domestic Roman building in northern Italy) occupy the entire tip of the peninsula, with olive trees growing among the arches and the lake visible through every opening. The poet Catullus (84-54 BC) lived here and wrote about the joy of returning to Sirmio ("O what a relief to set down my weary limbs on my own bed!"). Thermal springs (sulphurous, 69ยฐC) rise from the lake floor โ the Terme di Sirmione offers spa treatments, and free thermal water seeps into the lake at "Jamaica Beach" (the warm spots are obvious). Lake Garda โ
Plan my Lake Garda trip โCastello Scaligero (13th century): Enter the peninsula through the castle gate โ the castle sits IN the lake, with a fortified harbor (one of the few surviving medieval lake harbors). Climb the tower for lake panorama. โฌ6. Grotte di Catullo: Walk the full 2 hectares of Roman villa ruins โ the terraces, the thermal bath remains, the cryptoporticus, and the olive grove that makes this the most romantically ruined Roman site in northern Italy. Small museum with finds. โฌ8. Jamaica Beach (Spiaggia Jamaica): At the tip, near the Grotte โ flat rock slabs at the water's edge where thermal water seeps into the lake, creating warm pools. Free. The centro storico: Walk the main street (cars prohibited beyond the castle) โ gelaterias, trattorias, the chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore (15th century). Terme di Sirmione: The spa โ thermal pool, wellness treatments. Day pass from โฌ35.
Getting there: Desenzano-Sirmione station (Milan-Venice line, 25min from Verona). Bus from station to Sirmione (15min). By car: park in the large lots before the peninsula (โฌ2-4/h โ the centro is car-free). Stay: โฌ70-150/night (staying ON the peninsula is atmospheric but expensive; Colombare/mainland is cheaper). Eat: Risorgimento (€30-45 โ terrace on the lake), La Fiasca (€25-35). Crowds: Summer weekends are PACKED. Visit early morning or evening. Spring/autumn are ideal. Combine with: Desenzano (10min โ market, nightlife), Verona (25min), Mantova (40min), Bardolino (20min ferry โ wine).
