The Teatro Antico di Taormina — a Greco-Roman theater carved into the hillside at 200m above the sea, with views of Etna and the Ionian coast through its ruined columns — has hosted a film festival since 1955. The setting is so absurdly beautiful that the films themselves are almost secondary. Imagine watching a movie as the sun sets behind Etna, the sky turns purple, and the ancient columns frame the screen like a set designer's fantasy. The Taormina Film Fest (usually late June to early July) screens international films, hosts retrospectives, and brings directors and actors to the red carpet on Corso Umberto.
