Terme di Sirmione โ€” thermal water rising at 69°C on a Roman peninsula jutting into Lake Garda, with a castle, a spa, and the ruins of a poet's villa

Sirmione occupies a narrow peninsula stretching 4km into Lake Garda, with a Scaliger castle guarding the entrance, the ruins of a Roman villa (the "Grotte di Catullo" โ€” the largest Roman villa in northern Italy) at the tip, and thermal springs that pump sulphurous water at 69°C from 2,000 meters underground. The Romans knew about the springs. Catullus (the love poet, 1st century BC) wrote about Sirmione: "Paene insularum, Sirmio, insularumque ocelle" โ€” O Sirmio, gem of peninsulas and islands. The thermal water treats respiratory conditions, arthritis, and โ€” more relevantly for tourists โ€” stress. Aquaria Wellness Center, the modern spa built over the springs, lets you float in hot sulphur pools overlooking Lake Garda. Lake Garda guide →

Aquaria Thermal Spa

The main attraction for visitors: indoor and outdoor thermal pools (water temperature 34-36°C), saunas, steam rooms, Kneipp circuits, and a panoramic pool overlooking the lake. The outdoor thermal pool in winter โ€” floating in hot sulphur water while snow falls and the lake steams around you โ€” is one of Italy's most memorable spa experiences. Evening sessions (Friday and Saturday, extended hours to 10pm) are particularly atmospheric. Prices: €45-65 for a half-day (3.5 hours). Evening: €40-55. Book online at termedisirmione.com โ€” especially weekends. Bring swimsuit and towel (or rent). The sulphur smell is real โ€” your swimsuit will retain it for days. Bring one you don't love.

Grotte di Catullo

At the tip of the peninsula, the ruins of a grand Roman villa (1st century BC โ€” 1st century AD) cover 2 hectares. The name "Grotte" (caves) comes from the medieval period when the overgrown ruins looked like caves. It may or may not have belonged to Catullus (the attribution is traditional, not proven), but it was certainly a wealthy family's lakeside estate. The olive grove around the ruins, with views across the lake to Monte Baldo, is one of the most beautiful spots on Garda. €8. Allow 1 hour.

Practical

Getting there: Desenzano del Garda station (Milan-Venice HS line, 1h from Milan, 1.5h from Venice), then bus or ferry to Sirmione (20min). By car: 1.5h from Milan. Important: Sirmione's old town is largely car-free. Park in the lots near the entrance and walk. Stay: Sirmione (€80-180/night โ€” many hotels have thermal pools), or Desenzano (€60-120, more choice). Eat: Risotteria Melotta (risotto con pesce persico โ€” lake perch risotto, €15-20), La Rucola (Michelin โ€” lake fish, €50-70). Combine with: Lake Garda (Garda, Bardolino, Limone), Verona (30min), Brescia (30min).
