In a narrow canyon between Guardia Piemontese and Acquappesa on the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast, water at 47°C erupts from sulphurous vents โ the hottest thermal springs in Italy and among the hottest in Europe. The sulphur content (173mg/L hydrogen sulphide) makes the water therapeutic for skin conditions, respiratory problems, and arthritis, and also makes the canyon smell like rotting eggs at impressive volume. You get used to the smell in 10 minutes. You never get used to the heat. The natural pools โ arranged in the canyon floor beneath fern-covered cliffs โ range from scaldingly hot near the vents to warm and comfortable downstream. Combined with the black therapeutic mud (fango sulfureo) applied at 42°C, this is Calabria's most primitive and most powerful thermal experience. Calabria guide →
Plan my Calabria trip →The thermal complex: Both private spa facilities and natural open-air pools in the canyon. The private spas (Terme Luigiane spa center) offer controlled fango treatments, thermal baths, inhalation therapy, and pools at regulated temperatures (€15-40 depending on treatment). The natural canyon pools: Free access to some areas where thermal water flows through the ravine โ locals know the spots. The water is powerfully mineralized โ your skin feels silk-smooth afterward, and any silver jewelry will turn permanently black. The mud: Applied warm on the body and left to dry โ the minerals penetrate the skin. Used therapeutically for centuries.
