Croatia's truffle peninsula is 2 hours from Venice. Cheaper hunts, excellent white truffles, and a stunning day trip.
Plan your Italy trip โThe Istrian peninsula (Croatia, bordering Italy's Friuli) produces white truffles that rival Piedmont's โ at significantly lower prices. The largest white truffle ever found (1.31 kg) was dug up in Istria. The truffle hunting culture here is ancient, predating the region's transfer from Italy to Yugoslavia in 1947. Many truffle families are ethnically Italian and speak Italian.
Similar to Italian hunts: meet the tartufaro (the local name for truffle hunter) and dog, walk through Istrian oak forests, find truffles, then lunch at a konoba (traditional restaurant) with truffle shaved on fuลพi pasta (Istrian egg pasta) or eggs. Local Malvazija wine included. Prices: โฌ60-120/person โ 30-50% less than equivalent Italian experiences.
Drive from Trieste (90 min to Motovun/Buzet, Istria's truffle towns) or Venice (2.5-3h). Some operators offer pickup from Trieste. You'll cross the Italy-Croatia border (EU/Schengen โ passports needed, no customs). The Istrian truffle towns (Motovun, Buzet, Livade) are beautiful โ hilltop medieval villages overlooking the Mirna valley.
