Udine was Giambattista Tiepolo's first major patron city, and his early frescoes here (1726-28) — in the Palazzo Arcivescovile (Archbishop's Palace), the Duomo, and the Oratorio della Purità — represent some of his most luminous work. Piazza della Libertà is called "the most beautiful Venetian piazza on the mainland" — the Loggia del Lionello (1448-57, Venetian Gothic), the Loggia di San Giovanni (with the clock tower and the Moors who strike the hours), and the staircase climbing to the Castello on the hill create a civic space that is pure Venice transported 100km northeast. Udine's aperitivo culture is the most animated in Friuli: the ritual of the tajut (a small glass of wine, the Friulian equivalent of an ombra in Venice) consumed standing at the bar in the Piazza Matteotti area makes the early evening here one of the most convivial experiences in northeast Italy.
