Umbria Jazz is Italy's oldest and most important jazz festival, held in Perugia every July since 1973. For 10 days, the medieval hilltop city transforms into a jazz stage: free concerts in Piazza IV Novembre and the Giardini Carducci, paid arena concerts at the Arena Santa Giuliana (capacity 5,000), intimate club sessions at the Teatro Morlacchi, and impromptu jam sessions in bars and piazzas until 3am. Past headliners: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Tony Bennett. The Giardini Carducci terrace (panoramic views of the Umbrian valley) has free concerts in the afternoon. Funky Jam sessions in bars along Corso Vannucci run until the small hours — just walk and follow the music. Paid concerts: Arena Santa Giuliana (€30-80 depending on headliner) for the main evening acts. Teatro Morlacchi (€25-55) for intimate club-format shows. Getting there: Perugia station (Trenitalia from Florence 2h, Rome 2.5h), then Minimetrò (automated people-mover) to the centro storico. By car: 2h from Rome, 2h from Florence. Stay: book MONTHS ahead — Perugia fills completely during the festival. Hotels (€100-200/night), Airbnb, or stay in Assisi (25min, cheaper) or Foligno (40min). Budget: free concerts + street food + Perugian chocolate = €0-30/day. Add €30-80 for a paid arena concert. Food: Perugia is an excellent food city — torta al testo (flatbread), umbrichelli (thick pasta), porchetta, Sagrantino wine.
