While Bellagio drowns in tour buses and €8 espressos, Varenna remains a fishing village that happens to have extraordinary gardens, a lakeside passarella (walkway) cantilevered over the water, and the particular quality of a place where residents outnumber tourists at any hour. Villa Monastero — a former Cistercian convent turned botanical garden — extends 2km along the shore with terraced gardens descending through Mediterranean and subtropical plants to private lake-access steps.
