Vasto sits on a cliff above the Adriatic at the southern end of Abruzzo, where the coastline meets the beginning of the trabocchi. Below the cliff: Vasto Marina — a long sandy beach with dune reserves. Behind: a medieval old town with a Palazzo D'Avalos (whose loggia FACES EAST across the Adriatic — on clear days, the Croatian mountains are visible on the horizon). Punta Aderci (4km north) is a nature reserve with one of the most beautiful wild beaches in Italy — no stabilimenti, no buildings, just sand and cliff and sea. The old town: Palazzo D'Avalos (16th century — civic museum + art gallery + botanical garden on the cliff edge, €6). The Loggia Amblingh — a public terrace ON the cliff with the sea directly below. Walk the loggia at sunset — the Adriatic turns copper. Cattedrale di San Giuseppe. Piazza Rossetti. The food: Vasto is famous for brodetto alla vastese — fish stew with EVERY type of local fish (at least 10 varieties), tomato, peppers, served in terracotta. Different from every other brodetto in Italy because Vastesi insist on the DIVERSITY of fish. €12-18 at any trattoria.
Beaches: Vasto Marina (long, sandy, stabilimenti €12-18). Punta Aderci Reserve (4km north — WILD beach, walking path from cliff to sand, no facilities, one of Abruzzo's most beautiful beaches). Trabocchi: The Costa dei Trabocchi begins south of Vasto — the wooden fishing machines turned into restaurants start from San Salvo/Torino di Sangro. The cycling path (Via Verde) runs along the coast from Vasto toward Ortona.
