Villa Borghese is where Romans BREATHE. 80 hectares of gardens, pines, fountains, a lake with rowboats and a temple on an island, paths that wind past hidden sculptures and forgotten fountains. Inside the park: the Galleria Borghese โ Bernini, Caravaggio, Canova, Raphael, Titian in 20 rooms. At the park's western edge: the Pincio terrace โ the most famous sunset viewpoint in Rome, overlooking Piazza del Popolo and St. Peter's dome. Romans jog here, picnic here, bring their children here, argue with their partners here, and reconcile here. The park absorbs everything.
Laghetto (the lake): Rent a rowboat (โฌ3/20 min) and circle the island with the Temple of Aesculapius (18th century, deliberately picturesque โ designed to look exactly like this from the water). Pincio terrace: Walk to the western edge โ the belvedere over Piazza del Popolo with the twin churches below and St. Peter's dome on the horizon. THE sunset spot in Rome. Best in May-September when the sun sets behind the dome. Galleria Borghese: The park's treasure โ pre-book โฌ15, 2h slots, the most concentrated masterpiece experience in the world.
Bioparco (Rome Zoo): For families โ โฌ16 adults, โฌ13 kids. Not world-class but pleasant. Museo Etrusco di Villa Giulia: THE Etruscan museum โ the Sarcophagus of the Spouses (6th century BC, the reclining couple), Pyrgi gold tablets (trilingual inscription, Etruscan-Phoenician-Latin). โฌ10. Carlo Bilotti Museum (Orangery): De Chirico collection. Free. Globe Theatre (Shakespeare): Summer Shakespeare performances in English and Italian (Silvano Toti Globe Theatre โ replica of London's). Bike rental: Multiple points in the park โ โฌ4/hour. The paths are flat and shaded.
Entrances: Piazzale Flaminio (near Piazza del Popolo, Metro A). Porta Pinciana (top of Via Veneto). Via Pinciana (near Galleria Borghese). Free. Always open. The park is safe during the day โ avoid after dark in isolated sections. Day 4 โ (Borghese + Villa Borghese park)
