In 1550, Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este (grandson of Pope Alexander VI, son of Lucrezia Borgia) was appointed governor of Tivoli. Disappointed by the governor's palace, he hired architect Pirro Ligorio to transform the hillside below into the most spectacular garden in Europe. The result: 500 fountains, all powered by gravity alone (no pumps — an aqueduct and the natural hillside slope provide the water pressure). The Fontana dell'Organo (Water Organ) plays music using hydraulic pressure. The Cento Fontane (Hundred Fountains) is a 130m walkway with jets on both sides.
