The Villa Romana del Casale (3rd-4th century AD) has the largest and most complex collection of Roman floor mosaics in the world: 3,500 square meters of polychrome narrative mosaics covering every room of a vast rural villa, preserved by a medieval landslide that buried and protected them for centuries. The "Bikini Girls" (Sala delle Dieci Ragazze) โ 10 athletic women in what look like modern two-piece swimsuits, competing in sports โ are the most famous mosaics in Sicily and arguably the most reproduced Roman art after the Colosseum. The Corridoio della Grande Caccia (Great Hunt Corridor, 65m) depicts an elaborate animal hunt across the Roman Empire โ leopards, elephants, ostriches, and rhinos being captured for the arena. The villa's owner is debated โ possibly Maximianus, co-emperor with Diocletian. Sicily โ
Plan my Sicily trip โCorridoio della Grande Caccia (65m): The Great Hunt โ the entire length of the corridor shows Roman soldiers and hunters capturing wild animals across Africa and Asia. Tigers, leopards, an elephant being loaded onto a ship, an ostrich being lassoed. The detail and narrative energy are extraordinary. Sala delle Dieci Ragazze (Bikini Girls): 10 athletic women in bandeau tops and briefs โ running, throwing discus, lifting weights, and being crowned with roses. The mosaics prove that the "bikini" shape existed 1,700 years before the French fashion. The Triclinium (dining room): The Labors of Hercules โ monumental scenes including Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion. The Peristyle: Animal-head medallions framing the courtyard. The Erotic Room (Cubicolo della Scena Erotica): A private bedroom with explicit mosaic โ Roman domestic art without Victorian censorship.
