Universal 10-day base

Tops: 5-6 (3 casual, 1 nice, 1 versatile long-sleeve, 1 base layer in winter). Bottoms: 3-4 (2 casual, 1 dressy, 1 optional jeans). Shoes: 2-3 (1 walking, 1 evening, 1 sandal/boot by season). Outerwear: 1-2 (season-dependent). Underwear/socks: 5-6 (laundry midway). Sleepwear, swimwear (if coastal).

The midway laundry

Plan a laundry stop on day 5-6. Every Italian city has lavanderie self-service (self-service laundromats). €4-8 for wash + dry, 90 minutes. This halves your packing volume. Drop clothes in, go for a coffee, come back to clean everything. Some hotels offer laundry service (€10-20) or have a washing machine for guests.

The souvenir buffer

Leave 20% of your bag empty on departure. You WILL buy things in Italy — olive oil, wine, leather goods, ceramics, coffee, clothes. The space you left is the space you fill coming home. Alternatively: bring a packable duffel (€10-15, folds flat) for overflow.

💡 The 10-day Italy trip has 3-4 "outfit zones": Walking/sightseeing (comfortable, modest enough for churches), beach/casual (if coastal), nice dinner (1-2 outfits), and travel days (comfortable, easy to layer). If every packed item fits into at least one zone, you've packed correctly.
